Hamburger SV started the season on fine form and that has kept them in the top four since then. A 2-1 away win at FC Koln got them rolling in the new campaign. Ransford Konigsdorffer scored twice in the first half to lead Die Rothosen to a winning start. Up next was a draw at home to Hertha Berlin, before a 7-1 thumping of Meppen in the DFB Pokal. Back in the 2. Bundesliga, HSV went on to lose just one of their next six games – a 1-0 loss at Hannover. During that run, they beat Munster, Regensburg, and Dusseldorf, and picked up draws with Paderborn and Kaiserslautern.

Schalke Form
As for Schalke 04, they have made a terrible start to the campaign and it seems they will be involved in the relegation dogfight this term, just 6 years after playing in the Champions League last 16.
Die Königsblauen started the season with a 5-1 drubbing of Braunschweig and many thought they were in for a fine season, but they have failed to build on that performance. In the following game of the season Schalke lost 3-1 at Nurnberg, before they bounced back in the DFB Pokal to progress past Aalen. In 2. Bundesliga, Schalke then went on a four-game winless run with a draw with Magdeburg before three consecutive losses at the hands of FC Koln, Karlsruher, and Darmstadt.
Schalke 04 eventually pulled off a 2-1 away win over Munster in late September but they have not won a game since then. The draw at Hertha Berlin to start October was followed by three consecutive losses in all competitions; Hannover, Furth and Augsburg. After a winless run in October, Die Königsblauen started November with a goalless away at Ulm and will head to the international break without a win in five games.

This game has big ramifications for both sides at different ends of the table. HSV are battling for form despite their lofty position, while Schalke cannot literally not afford relegation with their on-going financial issues.
The past four meetings between the two teams in 2. Bundesliga has been dominated by Hamburger (W3 D1) and they have been better this season as well. The last time Schalke won in this fixture was during their time in the Bundesliga, 2-0 in 2017.

Prediction
Hamburger SV have been excellent in 2. Bundesliga this season, but that cannot be said about their opponents Schalke 04.
Hamburger may be sitting in the top four positions, but their current form have been largely underwhelming. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to bounce back against a side they have enjoyed some little dominance in 2. Bundesliga. With December lurking around, getting Hamburger tickets on time should be a priority.
On the other hand, Schalke have been poor all season as they have lost 6 of their first 11 games. They are up against a team that is higher than them on the table, and they have not beaten in nearly seven years. It is a herculean task for them at Volksparkstadion.
With that being said, one cannot look past a win for the home side or a draw at least.
