The Paralympic Games have seen many amazing and talented people who have achieved extraordinary things despite their difficulties. However, no one stands out quite like the swimming champion Trischa Zorn. During her swimming career, she has been able to win 55 medals, 41 of which are gold.
The most impressive thing of all is that she was able to do all that as a visually-impaired athlete. As a master of all swimming styles, she has been able to inspire many women and people with disabilities to take up sports and overcome their personal challenges. Her long and successful career has helped her to become an excellent attorney as well where she continues to inspire others.
Here is how Trischa Zorn became the most successful Paralympian ever.
First steps
Trischa Zorn was born with an eye disorder called aniridia, which prevents the iris from fully forming, leaving her blind. However, despite her extremely challenging difficulty, she was determined to practice swimming from a very young age. She was driven and passionate about the sport, and she swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores team ever since she was 10 until reaching 18.
Throughout the early days of her career, she was coached by many serious coaches which awakened her competitive spirit. This led her to step into the world of competitive swimming in college. This was a crucial step that put her on a path of victory. She continued to develop her skills and harness her competitive mindset when she attended Nebraska where she was the very first visually impaired athlete to earn an NCAA Division I scholarship, which is the highest level of intercollegiate athletics in the United States.
Using the support of others
Trischa enjoyed the support of many close people and also the people who fully recognized her athletic brilliance. The year before the 2000 Paralympics she was offered to live full-time at the Olympic Training Centre in Colorado Springs. This was a revolutionary moment for her and for the recognition of this athletic classification because Paralympic athletes were never offered any official residencies before.
This opened a whole new door for future Paralympic athletes. Zorn was able to enjoy all of the benefits such as access to various exercise equipment, top nutritionists and even sports psychologists. This was revolutionary in many ways, because it created much-needed recognition. Now modern solutions like the supported independent living continuously improve the lives of many people with disabilities allowing them to lead more fulfilling and independent lives while developing their full potentials.
This has completely pushed Zorn to perform even better. She felt that her sports performance was no longer a personal thing, but rather that she was fighting for the sake of future generations of Paralympic athletes as well.
Going forward despite the odds
Zorn’s road toward becoming the greatest Paralympian athlete of all times was riddled with a lot of prejudice and scepticism coming from others. Zorn’s disability was not immediately obvious to other people. This has made it very challenging for her to maintain her Paralympic classification, simply because her skills and achievements were so extraordinary that it was unfathomable to others that it was even possible.
Her disability was even officially challenged during the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. Zorn chose to swim without a “bonker” which is a guiding stick with a tennis ball attached to the top used to alert visually impaired swimmers when they reach the edges of a pool. This resulted in her leaving the games without a gold medal, winning four silvers and one bronze. However, this did not break her spirit because she knew that certain things you simply cannot control in life, such as the rumours and even whether she would like the results or not.
Life outside the sport
Her success in the Paralympic Games was not only based on the sport itself. Her entire career revolved around overcoming great difficulties in all aspects of life and inspiring others. That is why she was pursuing a law degree as well, which later helped her become an attorney for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Keeping the bigger picture in mind
Trischa Zorn believes that her success was never about the medals. She values the lasting impact that she was able to make on the legacy of the sport and the future generations of disabled athletes that she was able to inspire. Seeing the bigger picture, allowed her to achieve all these incredible things.
Trischa Zorn is a truly incredible athlete who was able to inspire many people both inside the swimming arena but also outside of it. She attributed her success to the support of many people, but also to the challenges which pushed her to become better.
